What Are Headshot Sessions Really Like? | Calgary Portrait Photographer

There is this idea that headshot sessions have to feel awkward, unnatural and way too serious. You picture sitting stiffly in a studio with a grin plastered on your face.

Thankfully, that could not be further from the truth.

The best portrait sessions feel more like hanging out with a friend who just happens to have a camera in her hand. They are relaxed, confidence-building, and all about capturing the version of you that your clients, coworkers, and community already know and love.

Starting With Confidence

I know when you book a photo session, you might not always feel confident about what to expect or how to take the photos. But that’s my job! I have a camera in my hand more days than not, and I walk you through each step of the process.

The way we start headshot sessions with confidence starts wayyyyy before you step foot in the studio.

From the moment you book, I am guiding you. From talking through your vision for the session, to deciding what outfits to wear: you have access to my creative eye as we design the session together.

I approach each of these sessions with individuality. We customize and tailor the set design, the outfit choices and even the poses, all to match the goal for the session.  And if you’re not even quite sure what the goal is… I help you visualize that too!

Why Headshot Sessions Should Feel Personal

The best part of a session like this is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Some people want something polished and professional. Others want photos that feel creative, moody, or a little more editorial.

That is why we can mix things up with:

  • Different outfits that show off your personality: whether that's jeans or a blazer!

  • Studio backdrops for a bold, modern look

  • Unique props that communicate the vibe & positioning of your brand/work

  • Cozy indoor spaces with softer light that really let you shine

  • Outdoor portraits at sunset for a more relaxed feel

When you’re showing up digitally in the work space, you want photos that reflect who you are. We aren’t out here trying to take a generic LinkedIn profile picture. We want something that catches people’s eye and represents you well. As a Calgary portrait photographer, I am uniquely positioned to help you bring that to life.

Where We Can Have Your Headshot Sessions:

While designing your session, one of the things we'll talk about is location! I have a Calgary studio that is a convenient & pretty option a lot of my clients use. We can also photograph outdoors, if that matches your brand! (Golden hour is always so pretty). The options really are endless.

Here are some common locations for headshot sessions:

  • My studio

  • Rented studio space (especially good if you've already photographed in my spot, and want another fresh look!)

  • Local coffee shops/downtown areas

  • Outdoor in nature during golden hour

  • Your office or home work space

  • Onsite while you're working (especially good for service providers like makeup artists or photographers)

Your Personality Matters Most

At the end of the day, the best photos are the ones that actually look and feel like you. Not overly posed or overly corporate. Just you, showing up confidently! We’ll design the outfits, the props, the location… and I’ll guide you through the posing.

The collaborative effort comes together for authentic photos that feel like you.

If you have been putting off booking headshot sessions because you are worried they will feel awkward, let this be your sign to finally do it. You might be surprised by how much fun you have.
