How to Take Up Space As a Woman | Calgary Boudoir Photographer

There is something deeply transformative about learning how to take up space as a woman. Not in a way that competes or overwhelms. But in a way that is rooted, confident, and fully embodied. As a Calgary boudoir photographer, I get to see this all the time in my studio. And I feel so lucky to witness it over and over.

So many women walk into their boudoir session carrying quiet hesitation.

Wondering if they should have waited. If they should have toned up their arms more. If their skin is smooth enough, or if their hair is falling the “right” way.

But what if this experience is not about perfection at all?

And that is where the shift happens.

Because when you realize that you already are perfection… all versions of you are… you really start accepting your strength. And embodying your femininity.

How to Take Up Space as a Woman

If you are wondering where to even start tapping into your powerful femininity, it begins with small, intentional choices. I might be biased, but a boudoir session is the perfect place to practice.

Here are a few practical ways to step fully into the experience:

  • Wear the lingerie you love, even if you are unsure how you will look in it

  • Carve out the entire day for yourself instead of rushing back to responsibilities

  • Book a massage or dinner afterward to extend the celebration

  • Display your photos in your bedroom where you can see them when you first wake up

  • Tell yourself, out loud, that you deserve this experience (because you do)

Taking up space is not about pushing other people to the side. It is about believing you belong exactly where you are, and acting like it.

You make different decisions.

You stand up for yourself.

You invest in yourself.

When you lean back into the chair without pulling your stomach in… or when you let your arms stretch overhead without hyper fixating on perceived “flaws”....  When you meet your reflection and soften instead of critique...

That is embodiment.

You do not need to fix anything before you show up.

You do not need to earn confidence before you step in front of the camera. Confidence often grows after you decide to be seen.

In this session, my client said yes to all of this

She chose a few outfits that made her feel like herself. A white cotton set. Pale blue lace bodysuit. And a classic black set for the last look. She moved through the poses with power, even in the moments she felt that little voice of self-doubt push through. She was not shrinking. She was inhabiting her body.

That is the whole point.

These boudoir sessions allow you space, time, softness and security to practice taking up space.

Take Up As Much Space As You Dare

Learning how to take up space as a woman is a practice. It is choosing to stop apologizing for your presence. It is allowing yourself to feel powerful and soft at the same time.
